Chapter Ten

Eddie had forgotten to call his mom. That wouldn’t have been such a big concern if she hadn’t left him a voicemail informing him of her choice of hotels—which wasn’t a hotel at all, but rather his RV. When he slipped out of Carter’s room to return her call, Eddie didn’t give her a chance to tear him a new one. He started off telling her Carter had been attacked and from there, that she needed to understand he wasn’t going to be at his RV and Carter sure wasn’t ready for company.

“But he has his mom?” she asked. “She’s going to help?”

Lying had never been such a temptation. Eddie wouldn’t stoop to that level. “His mom died a long time ago. Carter doesn’t have any family, and maybe you can see why you popping up might be too much for him right now.” Eddie took a second to calm himself, because his next words, though yet unspoken, were on the tip of his tongue and making him angry. “Mom, he doesn’t even want to go back to his place. I can’t blame him. The cops haven’t got a clue who did this to him.” That was the truth. No one knew where Mark was, and Carter couldn’t say for certain if it had been Mark’s voice he heard. “He just wants some comfort, and I can do that for him.”

She sighed and he knew he’d won this particular battle.

“Fine, son. If you or Carter needs anything, let us know. We’ll help how we can. Tino hasn’t found out anything, he said.”

“No, he hasn’t.” Eddie finished the call up and returned to Carter’s hospital room.

Carter’s left eye was open some now, two days after the assault. “Can you check on my release papers?”

“Sure I can. I’ll be right back.” Eddie knew Carter was eager to get out of the hospital. They’d agreed on a decent hotel in Odessa for a few nights. After that, decisions would have to be made. Carter had another week off from work. Eddie didn’t, though if he had been married to a wife, he could have taken leave.

He and Carter weren’t married at all, and if they ever wanted to be, it’d mean going to another state to do it. For the first time, Eddie really started thinking about the reasons marriage—and a transfer—might be a wise decision.

But there was Dare, who’d come to see Carter daily and called or texted Eddie to check on them both. Did he want to walk away from Dare without seeing if the three of them could make something special?

Should he put that in front of Carter? Then again, for all he knew, Carter wouldn’t want to leave his job—or Texas.

Damn it. They all needed to talk. Somehow he’d gotten closer to Dare in the past few days, and so had Carter. It was happening fairly quickly between them, perhaps because of the scare they’d all experienced.

Carter’s elderly neighbor, Jerri, had let Eddie know when the police had come and gone from Carter’s apartment.
